Written by Trey Dixon It's the long, hard journeys that bring the most satisfaction. Just ask Damon, owner of this 1988 5.0HO Mustang GT that started out as a pretty cool car, and has evolved into a machine that any Mustang enthusiast would envy.
For Damon, the project began in 1999 when he became the third owner of the Oxford white beauty. The mileage was good for an 11 year old car at 75,112. At purchase the pony had a slight dent in the rear hatch which allowed some rusting beneath. Also, the passenger door was a little difficult to open and allowed some leakage, the passenger side front quarter panel is bent, and the Flowmaster exaust tips are crooked.

The first year remedied most of these problems, as well as taking care of a faulty switch that caused the lamps to flicker after being on for extended periods. The factory 15 X 7 turbine rime are replaced with a set of 16 X 8 wheels from JD Wheels complimenting four new Goodyear Eagle F51G6 tires from Tiretrack.com. In 2000 a suitable replacement hatch is found from a wrecked 988 Mustang GT. To maintain the rear window defrost a glass exchange must take place between the old hatch and the replacement. Serious bass was added to the sound system with the addition of two JBL Grand Touring Series 12 inch subs, a Q- Logic dual hatch box, Polk tweeters, two Profile amps from Crutchfield.com. Anyone who's ever taken a pony from where they found it to where they wanted it to be knows the satisfaction of watching the evolution take place. It's rare that documentation as detailed as Damon has kept is posted for public view, but he's done it.
